Poor sanitation sparks apprehensions of health hazards

Poor sanitation has become a major concern in the Bheemini mandal headquarters of Mancherial district, with residents alleging that unhygienic conditions are putting public health at risk. Garbage has accumulated around the water tank located on the road leading to the ST Colony, while waste that is meant to be transported to the designated dumping yard is reportedly being dumped near the water tank itself. The heap of garbage has begun emitting a foul odour, raising fears of the spread of diseases among nearby residents.

Residents said the colony lacks a proper drainage system, causing wastewater to overflow onto the streets. They alleged that even basic preventive measures, such as the sprinkling of bleaching powder, have not been carried out. Stagnant water has also created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases.  The main road leading to the SC Colony has also become a source of concern, as garbage heaps are frequently seen along the roadside near residential areas.

Residents complained that the foul smell from the waste has become unbearable. They further alleged that some people use the roadside for open defecation, creating an unpleasant environment for pedestrians. Colony residents also pointed out that pigs are frequently seen roaming around the garbage dumps, worsening the unhygienic conditions. They claimed that officials clear the waste only after media reports highlight the issue.

According to local residents, the lack of regular monitoring by Gram Panchayat officials has allowed people to dump garbage near the water tank on a daily basis. They said the absence of a proper drainage network has resulted in sewage overflowing onto the roads, while continuous rains have caused wastewater to enter residential houses. The situation has led to an increase in mosquitoes and flies, adding to the hardships faced by the community. Residents have appealed to the Panchayat authorities to immediately remove the accumulated garbage, prevent further dumping in the area, and take permanent measures to improve sanitation and drainage facilities in the village.
