Metro India News | Hyderabad
The Cyber Crimes Wing of Hyderabad Police has issued a public advisory warning citizens about a surge in cyber fraud cases involving OTP sharing, malicious mobile applications, and so-called “digital arrest” scams.
According to the advisory, fraudsters are increasingly using stolen personal data—obtained through deceptive tactics—to carry out organized cyber crimes and financial extortion.
How the Scam Operates
Police explained that these cybercrimes are executed in multiple stages. Fraudsters first impersonate officials from banks, telecom companies, or government agencies to trick victims into sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs), gaining unauthorized access to sensitive accounts.
Victims are then persuaded to download malicious APK files through links sent via SMS, email, or messaging apps. Once installed, these applications allow criminals to access SMS messages, capture banking credentials, collect personal data, and even remotely control the device.
Using this stolen information, fraudsters build detailed profiles of victims, making their approach more convincing and targeted.
‘Digital Arrest’ Fraud
In a more alarming development, scammers pose as police officers or officials from investigative agencies and falsely accuse victims of serious crimes such as money laundering. They often conduct video calls to simulate legal proceedings, creating panic and fear.
Victims are then threatened with immediate arrest and pressured into transferring money under the pretext of verification, security deposits, or case settlements. In some cases, funds are directly siphoned using compromised banking details.
Police Advisory
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, Hyderabad, urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow these precautions:
Reporting Cyber Crimes
Citizens are advised to immediately report any cyber fraud or suspicious activity by calling the Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or visiting the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Hyderabad Police emphasized that awareness and prompt reporting are key to preventing such frauds and protecting personal and financial information.
