Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday warned that Telangana could face an economic crisis on the lines of Sri Lanka or Pakistan if the state continues on its current borrowing path. He alleged that successive BRS and Congress governments had pushed Telangana into a severe debt trap through financial mismanagement and corruption.

Addressing media at Vemulawada in Rajanna Sircilla district after inaugurating development works, Sanjay claimed that the two parties together had burdened the state with loans of nearly ₹10 lakh crore. He said the mounting debt posed a serious threat to Telangana's financial stability and accused both governments of pursuing reckless fiscal policies.

The BJP leader asserted that most major development projects in Telangana were being funded by the Centre. He alleged that funds released under the 14th and 15th Finance Commission for strengthening village infrastructure were diverted by the state government to pay salaries instead of being used for local development.

Sanjay also criticized the state government for allegedly approaching courts to stall Central welfare schemes. He questioned the rationale behind opposing programmes that directly benefit the public and claimed that such actions stemmed from political rivalry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's growing popularity.

Pitching for a "double engine government" in Telangana, Sanjay said only a BJP government working in coordination with the Centre could restore fiscal discipline, ensure transparent governance, and steer the state away from a looming financial crisis. He urged people to reject both the Congress and BRS and support the BJP.
