A rise in prices of tomatoes, onions, vegetable oils, and liquefied petroleum gas pushed up the cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali in June, while higher broiler prices resulted in the cost of non-vegetarian meals increasing, according to Crisil Intelligence. In its monthly indicator of food plate cost, the Crisil arm stated that the cost of preparing a vegetarian thali rose 5% on year to ₹28.4, whereas that of a non-vegetarian meal went up 6% to ₹58.2. Month-on-month, the cost rose 4% for a vegetarian thali and 3% for a non-vegetarian thali.

Tomato prices rose 31% on year to ₹42 per kg in June from ₹32 a year ago, driven by delayed and lower summer crop planting amid high temperatures in February-March. Onion prices rose 2% on year as higher-priced stored rabi stocks entered the market. Vegetable oil and LPG cylinder prices rose 10% on year each due to supply disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict.

Prices of broilers, which account for nearly 50% of the cost of a non-vegetarian thali, rose 7% on year due to tight supply caused by extreme summer heat. Going forward, a prolonged rainfall deficit during critical crop growth stages could impact kharif paddy yields.
