Maize prices surge on strong poultry buying, wheat rates mostly steady

Maize prices jumped in Indore on Monday as strong poultry-sector demand and reduced arrivals tightened supplies, while wheat remained largely steady across major centres.  Select basmati rice varieties strengthened on firm buying and limited availability. Maize climbed ₹110 to ₹2,500 per 100 kg in Indore, recovering Friday’s decline to ₹2,390. Prices have remained firm despite intermittent corrections, with poultry demand providing underlying support.

Wheat was unchanged at ₹2,840 per 100 kg in Indore, where balanced demand and supply kept prices stable. Buyers also remained cautious amid uncertainty over the timing of government open-market sales.

Kota bucked the trend, with wheat rising ₹50–₹100 to ₹2,600–₹2,650 per 100 kg as buying revived and arrivals remained at 5,000 bags of 50 kg each. Expectations that government sales may be delayed also encouraged purchases.

In Vashi, wheat held at ₹2,900 per 100 kg.Basmati rice was mixed. The 1401 variety remained at ₹9,600–₹9,700 per 100 kg, while 1121 held at ₹10,000–₹10,200. 

The 1509 variety advanced ₹200 to ₹8,400–₹8,500 as strong demand coincided with depleted rabi stocks ahead of fresh kharif arrivals. Near-term grain prices are likely to track poultry buying, crop arrivals and government wheat sales, while basmati supplies remain important.
