The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to declare Madurai airport in Tamil Nadu as an international airport, a move aimed at boosting connectivity, trade, and tourism in the region.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the decision reflects the aspirations of the people of Madurai and is expected to strengthen the city’s position as an educational, healthcare, and industrial hub. He added that several airlines have expressed interest in expanding international operations from the airport.

The elevation of Madurai airport, one of the oldest in Tamil Nadu, is expected to enhance regional connectivity and attract more international visitors, including pilgrims and business travelers. The airport’s new status will provide direct links to key pilgrimage sites such as the Meenakshi Amman temple, Koodal Azhagar temple, Thirupparankundram Murugan temple, Palamudhircholai Murugan temple, and Rameswaram.

Officials said the move aligns with the city’s historical and cultural significance, while also supporting local economic growth through increased trade and tourism. The international status is expected to create new opportunities for airlines and improve access for both domestic and foreign travelers.

With its industrial clusters, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, Madurai is well-positioned to benefit from enhanced international air connectivity. The government hopes the airport upgrade will help integrate the region more closely with global trade and tourism networks, driving long-term economic development.
