Andhra Pradesh is set to take a significant step forward in strengthening its defence manufacturing ecosystem with the launch of another prestigious industrial project along the state’s coastline. IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh will lay the foundation stone on Thursday for the establishment of an Autonomous Maritime Shipyard and Systems Centre at Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour in Bogole mandal of Nellore district. The facility, being developed by Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited with support from the state government, is expected to become the world’s first centre dedicated to autonomous maritime shipbuilding and systems development.
The proposed facility is being viewed as a milestone in India’s efforts to expand indigenous defence manufacturing and advance maritime technology capabilities. Officials say the centre will play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s naval technology base while also contributing to the development of coastal and marine industries. Designed as a self-reliant maritime shipyard, the project will focus on the development of advanced marine technologies, autonomous systems and maritime engineering solutions.
Beyond defence applications, the project is also expected to support the fisheries sector and strengthen the industrial and skills ecosystem across Andhra Pradesh’s coastal belt. With improved coastal surveillance capabilities and technology-driven maritime infrastructure, the facility will contribute to enhancing coastal security and defence preparedness.
In the first phase, Sagar Defence Engineering will invest approximately Rs. 45 crore in the project, creating employment opportunities for more than 750 people. To facilitate the project, the coalition government has allotted 29.58 acres of land on a lease basis at the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour, including 7.58 acres of waterfront land. Commercial operations at the facility are expected to commence by November 2026.
The Autonomous Maritime Shipyard will function as a state-of-the-art industrial facility designed for the construction, integration, testing and lifecycle support of unmanned and autonomous surface and underwater vessels.
