Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has urged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to take steps to sign a Power Purchase Agreement with NTPC Limited for the proposed 3 × 800 MW thermal power project at
Ramagundam in Peddapalli district.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Kishan Reddy requested the Telangana government to facilitate the agreement for the 2,400 MW second phase of the Ramagundam project. He also asked the state to allow NTPC sufficient operational flexibility to mobilise coal required for the entire 5 × 800 MW power generation plan.
The Union Minister recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier inaugurated two 800 MW units of the Ramagundam power project, which together generate 1,600 MW of electricity. The project was constructed at a cost of Rs.12,000 crore using ultra supercritical technology, which improves efficiency and reduces emissions.
Kishan Reddy stated that about 85 percent of the electricity generated from the proposed second phase would be supplied to Telangana. He noted that the state recently recorded a peak power demand of 18,139 MW on March 3, 2026, indicating the growing need for additional power generation capacity.
Referring to statements made earlier by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, the Union Minister pointed out that Telangana would require an additional 5,000 to 6,000 MW of thermal power in the coming years. He also highlighted projections that the state’s overall electricity demand could reach one lakh MW by the year 2047.
Kishan Reddy emphasised that NTPC’s advanced technology and cost-effective power generation would benefit both the government and consumers. He added that several southern states are already entering into power purchase agreements with NTPC to secure affordable and reliable electricity supply.
