‘Launch cost cuts, space-grade mfg key as India eyes global space ambitions’

Lowering launch costs through high-payload capabilities, indigenous production of critical space-grade components, and unlocking the downstream satellite data economy will be crucial for India to emerge as the world's third-largest space economy, a senior Department of Telecommunications official stated on Wednesday.

Department of Telecommunications Member (Services) Deb Kumar Chakrabarti emphasized the need for structural reforms, policy changes, and greater innovation in the space segment as India advances its global ambitions in the sector.

Citing government initiatives that have made the space sector attractive for companies, he stated that a proposed production-linked incentive scheme with a corpus of around ₹600 crore is coming up very soon.

On the policy front, the official urged comprehensive regulatory reforms, including strengthening the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre into a full-fledged regulator with enforcement powers.
