Kamareddy demolition drive faces bias allegations

The demolition of 12 commercial sheds by municipal authorities in Kamareddy has sparked a major controversy, with affected traders and councillors alleging selective action while hundreds of other unauthorised structures remain untouched.

According to those affected, there are 294 unauthorised commercial sheds along the old National Highway-7 and other parts of the town, but only 12 sheds belonging to a particular group were demolished. The action has led to allegations of political interference, with councillors across party lines questioning why only a few structures were targeted.

Several councillors alleged that the demolitions on Ramareddy Road were carried out under pressure from leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties. The issue has reportedly reached senior political leaders, who have denied any involvement. Meanwhile, the affected traders are trying to determine who was responsible for ordering the demolition.

Councillors representing the affected traders have demanded that the municipality remove all 294 unauthorised sheds instead of taking action against only a select few. They warned of protests if the authorities fail to act uniformly against all illegal structures.

The issue is expected to dominate the upcoming municipal council meeting, where councillors plan to question the Municipal Commissioner, Town Planning officials and the Municipal Chairperson over the demolition drive. Some councillors have also demanded an inquiry into alleged irregularities in municipal administration and the handling of unauthorised constructions. Municipal Commissioner Parvathalu said the municipality had identified 294 unauthorised commercial sheds in Kamareddy town and notices had already been served to all owners. Acknowledging complaints raised by councillors, he said action would be taken against all encroachments and unauthorised constructions in the coming days following due procedure.
