Metro India News | Hyderabad

The Telangana Prisons Department will inaugurate a Jail Museum along with the One Day Jail Experience programme on May 12 at the staff training centre inside the Chanchalguda Prison in Hyderabad. The initiative aims to give the public a realistic understanding of prison life and the evolution of correctional systems in India.

With this launch, Telangana becomes the fifth state in India to establish a Jail Museum after the Cellular Jail National Memorial, Alipore Jail Museum, Bengaluru Central Jail Museum and Goa Central Jail Museum.

Developed at SICA within Chanchalguda, the museum highlights the transformation of prisons from punitive systems to modern correctional and rehabilitation-focused institutions. It offers an immersive educational experience.

The museum features galleries of inmate paintings, old artifacts like handcuffs, chains, registers and guard equipment, along with sections explaining capital punishment, prison architecture and reform history.

Visitors will also experience recreated cells, audio visual chambers and the One Day Jail Experience, where they observe jail food, discipline and routine. Officials said the initiative reflects Telangana’s focus on rehabilitation and social reintegration.

The museum is an awareness initiative for students, researchers and visitors to understand correctional reforms and the shift from punishment to reformative justice. Officials say it will build empathy towards inmates and highlight rehabilitation. Through interactive exhibits and simulations, it aims to bridge society and prisons, promoting justice reform awareness.
