HMDA distributes free saplings at nursery mela

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), through its Urban Forestry wing, in collaboration with CTG – City Terrace Gardeners, distributed five free saplings to each household at the ‘Nursery Mela’ being held at Necklace Road. The Director of Urban Forestry, Rohit Gopidi participated in the program and distributed the saplings. He said that, in a metropolitan city like Hyderabad, there is an urgent need to encourage every household to grow plants and protect the environment in view of the fast-paced urban lifestyle, increasing pollution and declining green cover

He stated that, with the objective of enhancing public participation in urban greening, HMDA Urban Forestry has set an ambitious target of distributing five saplings to each household—comprising three fruit-bearing plants and two medicinal or ornamental plants—to one lakh families during the current year, based on Aadhaar authentication. On the occasion, 4,000 saplings were distributed to 800 families. The saplings included mango, Indian gooseberry (amla), lemon, henna, lemongrass, Acalypha Brown, Tecoma, and Shami (Jammi).

Mr. Rohit Gopidi appealed to every citizen to treat tree planting in residential premises as a people's movement and contribute towards transforming Hyderabad into a greener, healthier metropolis. Beneficiaries who received the saplings expressed the view that such initiatives would not only increase the city's green cover but also help reduce pollution.
