Himachal IVF lab boosts Jersey cattle genetics

In a significant breakthrough for livestock development in Himachal Pradesh, the State IVF Laboratory in Palampur has accelerated genetic improvements in Jersey cattle using advanced reproductive biotechnology.

The laboratory at Banuri, Palampur, successfully applied Advanced Reproductive Technology for Genetic Excellence, enabling rapid multiplication of elite dairy genetics. The process involved collecting oocytes from high-genetic-merit Jersey cows through ultrasound-guided procedures. These oocytes were matured, fertilized in vitro with semen from genetically superior bulls, cultured into embryos, and then transferred into healthy surrogate cows.

Progeny produced through this method retain the superior genetic traits of the donor cow, allowing faster multiplication of valuable germplasm. “IVF technology has played a transformative role in conserving superior breeds, accelerating genetic gains, boosting milk productivity, and enhancing income for livestock farmers,” said Dr Ajay Choudhary, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, Palampur.

Since its launch in January 2025, the Palampur IVF Lab has transferred around 45 Jersey and Jersey-crossbred embryos directly to field animals, achieving ten confirmed pregnancies, including six with Jersey embryos and four with crossbred embryos. A landmark achievement was the birth of three high-genetic-merit calves from a single elite Jersey cow within a year. The first male calf was born at Rajpur on Dr Rajiv Phull’s farm, a female calf at the Jersey Cattle Breeding Farm in Palampur, and another male at Kandbari to a surrogate cow owned by Sardar Singh.

The original donor cow is currently pregnant using semen from another superior bull, further strengthening the genetic base. To support the PT Jersey Project, male calves born in the field will be bought back after disease testing and formalities, quarantined at the Sperm Station, and later moved to the upcoming Calf Rearing Centre at Kandbari. Female calves will be inducted into the Jersey Cattle Breeding Farm, Palampur, for breed development.
