The 146th birth anniversary of renowned disability rights advocate Helen Keller was celebrated at the Helen Keller Educational Institution in Neredmet on Saturday. The event was jointly organized by the Helen Keller Educational Institution, Lions Club of Hyderabad Hi-Tech City, the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) and the National Forum for Disability Rights.
Helen Keller Institution Chairman Pathan Umar Khan highlighted that despite being blind, deaf and mute and living at a time when assistive devices were unavailable, Helen Keller pursued her education with determination and became the first deaf blind person to earn a college degree. National Forum for Disability Rights President Venkat urged students with hearing and visual impairments to draw inspiration from Helen Keller's life and make full use of the opportunities available to them.
NPRD Secretary Adivaiah called for greater encouragement and welfare measures for persons with disabilities. Students who secured outstanding results in the annual Class 10, Intermediate and Degree examinations were awarded with mementoes, certificates and cash prizes.
