On the occasion of World Heart Day on September 29, 2026, Dr A. Nagesh, Robotic CTVS and Heart Transplant Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, urged people to recognize the warning signs of cardiovascular disease and make heart health a part of everyday life. The theme for World Heart Day 2026, “Heart Disease Can Hide in Plain Sight: Don’t Miss a Beat,” highlights the importance of recognizing symptoms that are often overlooked and taking timely preventive action.
High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy eating habits, chronic stress and inadequate sleep can gradually damage the heart and blood vessels,” said Dr. Nagesh. He advised people to regularly monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, particularly those with a family history of heart disease or other risk factors.
Dr Nagesh also cautioned people against ignoring unusual symptoms. Chest discomfort or pressure, breathlessness, excessive sweating, unexplained fatigue, dizziness, palpitations or pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw should not be dismissed, particularly when they occur suddenly or during physical activity. He encouraged families to adopt habits such as walking, taking stairs instead of lifts, reducing processed and high-salt foods and getting adequate sleep.
