Metro India News | Hyderabad : Former Minister and BRS Legislature Party Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao has strongly criticised the Congress government over the lack of basic infrastructure at Maheswaram Government Medical College and demanded immediate steps to protect students' academic future.
Harish Rao, along with former Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy, former MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy and BRS General Secretary Kyama Mallesh, visited the students' protest camp at Mangalpally in Ibrahimpatnam constituency and interacted with students and parents.
The BRS leader alleged that students had been suffering due to the non-payment of building rent, electricity and water bills for 26 months, besides the absence of drinking water, toilets, laboratories, library and hostel facilities. He also flagged the lack of occupancy, fire safety and Pollution Control Board clearances, claiming that snakes, pigs, dogs and monkeys were roaming around the premises.
Questioning the government's priorities, Harish Rao asked how it could announce massive spending on projects such as Musi beautification and Future City while failing to provide basic facilities to medical students.
He recalled that the previous BRS government had allocated 25 acres for the college, sanctioned Rs.182 crore for buildings and hostels and laid the foundation stone for a 400-bed hospital. He alleged that construction had remained stalled for three years since the Congress government assumed office. Demanding urgent intervention, he called for immediate bus facilities, drinking water and toilets, besides allowing students' vehicles onto the campus. He also demanded that the District Collector and Director of Medical Education visit the protest camp and hold discussions with students.
