Deterioration of bridge causes safety hazard

The Sitarama Canal Bridge on the National Highway between Anjanapuram and Jinkalagudem villages in Burgampahad mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district has become a major safety hazard, with its deteriorating condition posing a serious risk to motorists. The concrete surface of the bridge has eroded extensively, exposing steel reinforcement bars and leaving large potholes across the roadway. Despite the bridge's dangerous condition, residents allege that the concerned authorities have failed to take timely action.

The bridge is located on a busy National Highway connecting Burgampahad, Sarapaka, Bhadrachalam, and Kothagudem, carrying thousands of two-wheelers, cars, heavy trucks, and state-run RTC buses every day. It also serves as a key route for heavy vehicles transporting goods to and from ITC and nearby industrial areas. With such high traffic volumes, the deteriorating bridge has become a major concern for commuters. Exposed steel rods protruding from the damaged bridge deck have emerged as a serious threat to road users.

Motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, risk skidding on the uneven surface, while vehicle tyres could be punctured or damaged by the exposed metal. The danger is even greater at night, when the protruding rods are difficult to spot, increasing the likelihood of accidents. The situation worsens during the rainy season, as potholes fill with water, making it impossible for motorists to judge the depth or location of the damaged sections. Local residents say several minor accidents have already occurred due to the bridge's poor condition.

Thousands of students, employees, farmers, traders, and other commuters use the bridge every day. Fearing that the deteriorating structure could lead to a major accident, local residents have expressed anger over what they describe as the inaction of officials from the Sitarama Canal Project and the Roads and Buildings Department.
