No complacency on SIR

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as a highly sensitive and crucial issue, directing Ministers, MLAs, MPs and Assembly constituency incharges to remain vigilant and actively participate in awareness campaigns across Telangana.

Addressing a Zoom meeting with party leaders, the Chief Minister expressed concern over what he termed a lack of seriousness among some leaders towards the SIR exercise. He warned that the Congress party would not remain a silent spectator if negligence by party functionaries resulted in political or electoral setbacks.

Revanth Reddy said he reviewed district-wise reports on SIR awareness programmes and noted varying levels of participation and effectiveness. He stressed that more awareness meetings should be organised under the Congress banner to ensure that voters, particularly those from weaker sections, fully understand the importance of the exercise and complete the required procedures.

The Chief Minister instructed incharge Ministers to take greater responsibility and personally monitor awareness activities in their respective districts. He cautioned that any failure to handle the issue properly could lead to injustice for poor and vulnerable citizens.

Highlighting the stakes involved, Revanth Reddy said the deletion of genuine voters from electoral rolls could adversely affect access to welfare-linked documentation and government benefits. He urged party leaders to ensure that no eligible voter is deprived of his or her democratic rights due to a lack of awareness or administrative lapses.

Making it clear that party discipline would be enforced, the Chief Minister said all leaders must strictly follow organisational directions on the SIR campaign. He warned that incharges who fail to implement party instructions would be identified and replaced. “Negligence on such a critical issue will not be tolerated,” he asserted.

Revanth Reddy announced that the party would closely monitor progress over the next ten days before taking further decisions. He also directed local leaders to involve sarpanches and grassroots workers in spreading awareness in villages and ensuring maximum public participation in the SIR process. The Chief Minister reiterated that protecting the voting rights of the poor must remain the Congress party’s top priority.
