Hyderabad's transformation from a pharmaceutical manufacturing powerhouse into a global healthcare innovation hub is set to gain momentum with the Centre announcing a comprehensive policy framework to boost investment, research and manufacturing in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors.

The initiative aims to position Hyderabad as a world-class destination for healthcare innovation through financial incentives, faster regulatory approvals, infrastructure development and talent promotion.

Already India's second-largest pharmaceutical manufacturing hub, Hyderabad is home to more than 1,500 pharma units and accounts for nearly 13% of the country's pharmaceutical exports. The city has also emerged as a major medical device manufacturing centre, with over 15,000 manufacturers and an estimated annual production capacity of Rs 45,000 crore.

The policy focuses on strengthening research and development, modernising manufacturing infrastructure and attracting multinational companies. Proposed measures include concessional loans, tax incentives for research, expedited approvals for new facilities and support for product certification.

The government expects the initiative to attract investments of around Rs 25,000 crore over the next five years and generate nearly 50,000 skilled jobs in manufacturing, research and allied sectors.

Infrastructure upgrades will include dedicated power networks, water treatment facilities, improved connectivity and advanced logistics systems. An additional Rs 5,000 crore has been earmarked for innovation, startup funding, collaborative research and specialised testing facilities.

The roadmap will be implemented in phases, beginning with SEZ development and funding activation, followed by infrastructure expansion, global outreach and enhanced manufacturing and R&D capacity.
