Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to expedite works under the Jaladhara–Jalaharathi programme and ensure that all ongoing projects are completed by the end of June. Emphasizing the importance of long-term water security, he called for innovative approaches and greater community participation in water conservation and restoration efforts across the state.
Reviewing the progress of the programme through a video conference from the Chief Minister’s Camp Office, Chandrababu instructed officials to accord top priority to the restoration and development of chain-linked tanks. He also directed district administrations to make optimum use of funds available under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and warned against any delays or lapses in fund utilization.
The Chief Minister asked district collectors to identify and implement projects that connect water-surplus basins with water-deficit regions to improve water availability and strengthen irrigation potential.
He stressed the need for timely completion of check dams, percolation pits, farm ponds, contour trenches, and other water conservation structures being taken up under the Jaldhara initiative. Highlighting successful models, Chandrababu suggested that officials study the Valmikipuram Vagu Development Model and explore the possibility of replicating it in suitable locations across the state. He urged every district to develop innovative solutions tailored to local water management needs.
The Chief Minister further directed officials to ensure that all tanks, check dams, and farm ponds restored during the first phase of the programme remain structurally sound and free from breaches. He instructed authorities to remove obstructions in canals, drainage channels, and embankments to facilitate smooth water flow and prevent flooding during the monsoon season.
To assess the programme’s impact, Chandrababu directed the Irrigation Department and the AWARE system to periodically evaluate and document the benefits generated through Jaldhara works. He also called for district-wise estimates on groundwater recharge, water conservation, and ecosystem restoration achieved through the initiative.
Stressing the importance of public involvement, the Chief Minister said local communities, farmers, water user associations, elected representatives, and government officials should actively participate in the programme. Such collective efforts, he said, would help ensure the long-term sustainability and success of water conservation initiatives. Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu, district collectors, and senior officials participated in the review meeting.
