Leading room airconditioner makers are increasing prices by 5-15% between February and April as raw material costs, a weak rupee, and new energy-efficiency norms push up expenses. The hikes come just before the peak summer season, when demand typically surges.
Major players, including Daikin, Voltas, Blue Star, LG, Haier, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, are adjusting prices across models, reflecting higher costs for copper, aluminium, freight, and compliance with revised star-rating norms.
Daikin India plans price hikes of up to 12%, varying by model. Chairman & MD Kanwaljeet Jawa said rising copper prices, a stronger US dollar, higher freight costs, and new energy regulations have left no alternative but to raise prices. Jawa expects strong sales this year, predicting at least 15% growth due to forecasts of a hot summer.
Blue Star raised prices 8-10% in mid-February, though old-priced stock remains in the market. Managing Director B Thiagarajan said dealers had stocked up in anticipation of the increase, so new higher-priced batches will take time to reach consumers.
