Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the armed forces to increase the use of AI to develop an “intelligent military system” and strengthen combat capabilities as part of the country’s military modernisation drive.

Ahead of the People’s Liberation Army’s 99th anniversary, Xi said the military had made “significant progress” in modernisation and called for “decisive” advances towards its objectives. Xi, who heads the Central Military Commission, told a Politburo group study session the PLA should strengthen the military application of unmanned intelligent technologies and develop network information systems, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

He said combat capabilities remained the ultimate objective and testing criterion for high-quality modernisation of national defence and the armed forces. Xi called for stronger combat readiness, military training and efforts to fight corruption as PLA works towards its centenary goals in 2027. —PTI
