Sri Lanka confers highest state honour on violinist Subramaniam

New Delhi: Violin virtuoso and Padma Vibhushan awardee L Subramaniam has been conferred Sri Lanka’s highest state honour for his contribution to music and strength­ening cultural ties with India.

The honour was presented on behalf of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya by Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi.

The award recognises Subramaniam’s contribution to Indian classical music and his pioneering work in Global Fusion. Subramaniam spent part of his childhood in Sri Lanka, where his father, violinist and music educator V Lakshminarayana, lived and taught.

As part of the celebrations, Subramaniam performed at Colombo’s Elphinstone Thea­tre with his children Ambi Subramaniam and Mahati Subramaniam. A road named Violin Maestro Lakshmina­rayana Road was also inaugurated in Jaffna in honour of his father. —PTI
