Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu on Sunday at the Central Government Complex in Kavadiguda in the city along with another Union Minister for Coal and Mines Kishan Reddy said that the construction of the Mamunur airport would be completed within the next two-and-a-half years of completion of land acquisition. He further added, “The desire of the people of Warangal to get clearance for the airport was finally fulfilled and added that he was happy that it was happening during his tenure.”
The Warangal airport was earlier the largest airport in Asia and till 1981, there was some activity going on there. "Airports have been set up in smaller cities as well and after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, a revolution started in the aviation sector. In the last 10 years, the number of airports in the country has increased from 74 to 150,” Rammohan Naidu said and added that the airports had also been set up in the smaller cities.
He said the clearance of Mamunur airport was a long-standing desire of the people of the State and added that in a big city like Warangal, there was no step forward in the past in the matter of the airport. “A 2800-metre runway is required for setting up the airport. We have sent a proposal from the Centre that an additional 280 acres of land is required for land acquisition.
The airport works will be expedited if the State government acquires land at the earliest. We have taken an NOC from Shamshabad airport and given clearance. In the case of Bhadradri airport, a site was earlier proposed. The site suggested earlier was not suitable and another site was proposed. In the case of Bhadradri, we will examine the feasibility on the new site and take a decision," Naidu said.
The minister said the development of the area would be accelerated with the setting up of the airport and added that Warangal airport will be connected with UDAN scheme. Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the Centre was ready to provide all possible assistance in commercial operations and added that that the Central Government was working with determination to start the flight services to the historic town of Warangal. Stating that the establishment of the airport will improve employment opportunities in Warangal, he said the establishment of Warangal airport was a long-standing desire of the people of Telangana.
