The Government is keen on rolling out the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, passed in the Assembly a few days ago in a bid to extend relief to hapless old parents.

The law mandates that children must support their dependent parents, failing which up to 15 percent of their salary or Rs 10,000 per month will be deducted and transferred directly to the parent’s account.

Unlike earlier provisions under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which required lengthy legal processes, the new law simplifies access to justice. Parents can now approach their District Collector, who will act as the designated authority to investigate complaints and issue orders within 60 days.

Once the Governor gives assent and the Gazette notification is issued, implementation is expected to begin swiftly. A dedicated online portal will allow elderly parents to file complaints easily, removing barriers such as travel, legal expenses, and procedural delays.

Beyond enforcement, the state is building a support system. A Senior Citizens Commission, led by a retired High Court judge, will hear appeals, while a state-level monitoring body will oversee implementation and ensure accountability. These institutions will have quasi judicial powers, including the authority to conduct inquiries and summon witnesses, as noted in the brief on page 2.
