Workers at the Shanthikhani underground coal mine in Bellampalle, operated by Singareni Collieries, have raised serious concerns over alleged unsafe working conditions, claiming that inadequate ventilation and the lack of basic facilities are putting their lives at risk. Shanthikhani, once regarded as one of the most productive mines in the Singareni coalfields, is reportedly facing severe operational challenges. Workers claim that conditions underground have deteriorated to the point where their safety cannot be guaranteed.

They allege that across the South District, particularly between Levels 38 and 40, work areas are suffering from insufficient airflow, forcing miners to work in oxygen-deficient conditions. They further claim that essential facilities such as proper ventilation, water supply, and adequate safety measures are either inadequate or unavailable. According to the workers, they are being compelled to continue operations even in conditions they describe as hazardous. Some miners claim that inadequate ventilation has left workers struggling to breathe while carrying out their duties underground.

Workers that the constant fear of accidents and poor air circulation has significantly affected morale and working conditions. Several workers and local observers have urged the Singareni management to review the functioning of local officials and take corrective measures. They have demanded immediate improvements in ventilation, safety infrastructure, and other basic welfare facilities. They have also called for departmental action against officials found responsible for neglecting workplace safety and worker welfare.
