Probe sought into illegal sand trade

Allegations of large-scale illegal sand transportation and stockpiling have resurfaced in Burgampadu mandal, with residents demanding an inquiry into the alleged inaction of the authorities.

According to locals, huge quantities of sand have been illegally dumped in Gandhinagar, Bhaskarnagar and Rajivnagar. They claim that nearly 20 tractor-loads of sand have been stored on a vacant site along the road leading from the lane beside an ATM in Gandhinagar. Residents allege that sand is being transported from nearby riverbeds during late-night hours and stored at various locations before being sold for Rs.3,000 to Rs.4,000 per tractor-load.

The allegations have gained attention after photographs and videos purportedly showing the illegal stockpiles circulated on social media. Despite these claims, residents allege that no visible action has been taken so far by the Revenue or Mining departments.

Locals further claim that a comprehensive inspection in Gandhinagar, Bhaskarnagar and Rajivnagar could uncover between 500 and 600 tractor-loads of illegally stored sand. They questioned why repeated complaints over illegal transportation and storage have not resulted in enforcement measures.

Some residents have also alleged the involvement of certain officials in facilitating the illegal sand trade. However, these allegations remain unverified and there has been no official confirmation.

Villagers have urged district authorities to conduct a thorough investigation through special teams, verify the allegations, seize any illegally stored sand if found, and initiate legal action against those responsible in accordance with the law. Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
