Alliance rift deepens as Varma’s sharp remarks trigger political flashpoint

Cracks within the ruling alliance in Andhra Pradesh surfaced yet again in Pithapuram, the constituency represented by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, as tensions between TDP and Jana Sena leaders escalated into a public confrontation. The fresh flashpoint, triggered by a protocol dispute, quickly turned into a political showdown, exposing underlying friction between the two parties.
The controversy erupted during a government programme held under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), where a flex banner displayed at the venue did not feature Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s photograph. The omission drew immediate objection from TDP State Vice-President and former MLA SVSN Varma, who termed it a serious breach of official protocol.
Varma openly questioned officials and Jana Sena representatives, asking why the Chief Minister’s image was missing in a government programme. His questioning soon escalated into a heated argument with Jana Sena district president Tummala Babu. The situation worsened when former MLA Pendem Dorababu intervened, leading to pushing, shouting, and near physical confrontation between cadres of both parties. Police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
What followed was even more politically significant. Varma’s strong and pointed remarks laid bare the simmering tensions within the alliance. In a stern warning, he said, “TDP and Jana Sena may be part of one alliance, but that does not mean anyone can ignore discipline or protocol. We will not tolerate those, especially leaders who shifted from YSRCP, trying to dominate here.”
His comments were widely interpreted as a direct attack on certain Jana Sena leaders and a reflection of growing distrust at the grassroots level. He further added, “We worked hard to ensure Pawan Kalyan’s victory. Is this the respect we get in return? If there is an insult to the Chief Minister, we will not remain silent.”
Varma also blamed officials for negligence and formally lodged a complaint with the district collector, demanding action against those responsible for the protocol violation.
Significantly, this is not the first instance of friction in Pithapuram. Earlier incidents involving slogan clashes and disputes over political visibility had already indicated a fragile working relationship between TDP and Jana Sena cadres in the constituency.
The latest episode highlights a widening coordination gap within the alliance at the local level. While top leadership continues to project unity, ground realities suggest a different picture, one marked by rivalry, assertion of dominance, and unresolved political egos that could pose challenges for coalition stability going forward.
