Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender has urged the Central government to allocate special funds for the cleanup of the heavily polluted Musi River in Hyderabad.
Speaking in Parliament during the discussion on demands for grants to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, he highlighted the severe environmental and health hazards caused by industrial waste and untreated sewage flowing into the river. He called for immediate action to upgrade and strengthen Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and prevent hazardous waste from entering the river, emphasizing that a clean Musi is vital for environmental sustainability and public health.
Eatala also raised concerns about the increasing pollution of Hyderabad’s lakes due to sewage discharge, leading to the destruction of aquatic ecosystems and groundwater contamination.
He urged the ministry to fund lake revitalization projects, sewage diversion systems, and modern wastewater management solutions.
Pointing to the rapid urbanization in Malkajgiri, his parliamentary constituency, he stressed the urgent need for improved sanitation infrastructure and drinking water facilities. Eatala noted that newly developed colonies and slums are struggling with water shortages, making clean drinking water access a pressing issue.<Acknowledging the Centre’s efforts through schemes like the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT, he appealed for similar financial assistance for Telangana. "With growing urbanization, immediate intervention is required to ensure clean water and sanitation for the people of Hyderabad," the MP stated, urging the ministry to prioritize funding for these critical projects.
