Monsoon delay puts Tekulapalli farmers on edge

With the monsoon season well underway, farmers in Tekulapalli mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district are anxiously waiting for widespread rainfall as below-normal showers have slowed kharif agricultural operations. Unlike previous years, when steady rains enabled farmers to begin sowing by this time, the region has received only scattered drizzles, leaving fields without adequate soil moisture.

Farmers who cultivate paddy, cotton, maize and red gram have already ploughed their lands and purchased seeds and fertilisers in preparation for the season. However, insufficient rainfall has forced many to postpone sowing. Those who sowed seeds after the initial showers are now worried about poor germination and crop growth due to the prolonged dry spell.

Agricultural activities, including ploughing, sowing and nursery preparation, have come to a near standstill as the soil lacks the required moisture. Water levels in tanks, ponds and streams have also remained low, adding to farmers' concerns over irrigation.

The situation has become more difficult as cultivation costs have risen this season. Increased prices of seeds, fertilisers and pesticides have added to the financial burden on farmers, many of whom have borrowed money for cultivation. They fear that if dry conditions continue for a few more days, they may be forced to re-sow crops, leading to additional expenses.

The delayed agricultural season has also affected farm labourers, who usually find regular employment during sowing and transplantation. With farming activities yet to gather pace, many labourers are facing a shortage of work and are considering migrating to nearby areas in search of employment. Agriculture experts warn that any further delay in rainfall could affect crop establishment and reduce yields, particularly for water-sensitive crops such as paddy and cotton. Farmers are now hoping for widespread rains in the coming days to revive agricultural operations and ensure a successful kharif season. They have also urged the government to closely monitor the situation and extend timely support if dry conditions persist.
