Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals successfully performed a complex laparoscopic splenectomy on 7 year old Yashwanth from Kothur, who was suffering from Extra Hepatic Portal Vein Obstruction (EHPVO), severe portal hypertension, massive splenomegaly, hypersplenism, severe anemia, and significant growth retardation. Upon evaluation, doctors found that the child had a massively enlarged spleen measuring 17 cm, critically low hemoglobin levels of 6 g/dL, and a markedly reduced white blood cell count of 2690/mm³.

Despite these complexities, the surgical team successfully completed the entire procedure laparoscopically without converting to open surgery. Speaking about the case, Dr. Kishore Reddy, Liver Transplant Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals described the surgery as one of the most technically demanding ones due to severe portal hypertension, extensive collateral circulation and limited operative space.

Dr. Madhumohan Reddy, Senior Paediatric Surgeon, said that one concerning aspect was the child’s severe growth retardation where seven years old Yashwanth physically resembled a five-year-old and added that a significant improvement in his growth, blood counts and overall development is expected following the surgery.
