In a step toward strengthening migrant welfare, the Andhra Pradesh government is set to replicate the Konaseema Centre for Migration (KCM) model across the state, positioning it as a best-practice framework for safe and structured overseas migration, particularly for workers heading to Gulf countries.
The Konaseema Centre for Migration, established to address the vulnerabilities of migrant workers, has gained recognition for its comprehensive, end-to-end support system. From pre-departure counselling to post-migration grievance redressal, the centre has played a critical role in reducing exploitation, improving awareness, and ensuring safer migration pathways.
Officials say the KCM model stands out for its integrated approach. It offers verified job information, legal guidance, documentation assistance, and skill mapping, ensuring that workers are not misled by fraudulent agents. Special focus has been placed on Gulf-bound migrants, who form a significant portion of Andhra Pradesh’s overseas workforce and are often exposed to risks such as contract substitution, poor working conditions, and wage disputes.
One of the key strengths of the Konaseema model is its robust grievance redressal mechanism. Migrants and their families can report issues through dedicated helplines and local support systems, enabling quicker intervention by authorities. The centre also coordinates with Indian missions abroad to resolve distress cases, including repatriation and legal aid.
Encouraged by its success, the state government now plans to establish similar centres in other districts with high migration rates. The expansion aims to institutionalise safe migration practices, enhance worker protection, and create a reliable support network for families left behind.
Officials indicate that the new centres will also focus on awareness campaigns at the village level, educating potential migrants about legal procedures, risks, and government support systems. Additionally, partnerships with recruitment agencies and training institutes are being strengthened to ensure ethical recruitment and skill readiness.
By scaling up the Konaseema model, Andhra Pradesh aims to become a leader in migrant governance, balancing economic opportunities abroad with strong safeguards at home.
