Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed sea trials of the repaired 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon and vowed to accelerate efforts to build a nuclear-armed navy, state media reported on Saturday.
The vessel had been damaged during a failed launch last year.
Kim said naval modernisation was a key part of a new five-year defence plan that includes larger destroyers and unspecified underwater weapons. State media said the warship can carry anti-aircraft, anti-ship, ballistic and cruise missiles.
The development comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to North Korea on Monday. Analysts say Kim is seeking to strengthen his country’s military posture while deepening strategic ties with key allies.
