A 26-year-old youth narrowly avoided permanent disability after sustaining a deep palm injury during a cultural performance at a private school. The incident occurred when he accidentally cut his right hand while applying a symbolic blood tilak to a portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji during a rendition of the song “Shoorveer.”

The patient, a karate instructor from LB Nagar, suffered complete severance of the tendons, digital nerves, and blood vessels supplying his little and ring fingers. He was rushed to the emergency department at Kamineni Hospitals with profuse bleeding, loss of finger movement, absence of sensation, and compromised blood flow.

Dr. B. Krishna Chaitanya, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, led an emergency microsurgical procedure to restore circulation and repair the damaged nerves and tendons. “Under an operating microscope, we meticulously sutured the tiny blood vessels and sensory nerves using stitches finer than a human hair. This super microsurgery prevented permanent loss of finger function,” he explained.

In an unusual move to ease the patient’s anxiety, the surgical team played the same “Shoorveer” song during the operation, helping him feel calmer and reassured.
