India milk output surges to 247 MT

India’s milk production has witnessed a dramatic surge, climbing from 17 million tonnes in 1950 to 247 million tonnes in 2025, marking a major milestone in the country’s dairy sector growth, said M L Jat.

Speaking at the 22nd convocation of ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal, he emphasized that dairy continues to anchor the livestock economy. Valued at Rs 17.25 lakh crore, the sector contributes around 65 per cent of total livestock output and about 16 per cent to India’s gross value added, supporting nearly 46 per cent of the population.

He noted that the Union Budget allocation of Rs 6,153 crore for animal husbandry, a 16 per cent increase, is aimed at strengthening the sector. The plan includes recruitment of 20,000 veterinarians, improved infrastructure for colleges and laboratories, and tax relief for cooperatives to accelerate long-term growth.

Data shows indigenous buffaloes contribute the highest share at 31.18 per cent, followed by crossbred cattle at 30.80 per cent. Other contributors include indigenous cattle, non-descript breeds, goats and exotic cattle.

Dheer Singh also addressed the event, highlighting advancements in dairy research and development.
