The Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO) and the National Cancer Grid (NCG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen surgical oncology education and expand specialised training and fellowship opportunities for young cancer surgeons across India.
The initiative follows a proposal by Dr. C.S. Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital and Convener of NCG, to establish a structured framework for training and mentorship through collaboration between the two organisations.
Dr. T. Subramanyeshwar Rao, IASO President and Medical Director of Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI), Hyderabad, is among the key leaders supporting the initiative.
The partnership will develop joint fellowship programmes, facilitate mentorship at suitable NCG-affiliated institutions, and promote academic exchange and collaborative research. Training will focus on advanced surgical techniques, minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgery and emerging technologies. Workshops, masterclasses, conferences and webinars will further encourage knowledge-sharing.
Dr. Pramesh said developing a skilled surgical oncology workforce was essential to improving cancer care nationwide. The agreement would create structured training opportunities, enabling young surgeons to learn from experienced specialists and leading institutions.
Dr. Rao said the collaboration would equip aspiring cancer surgeons with specialised skills, confidence and professional guidance to meet the evolving demands of cancer treatment.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Pramesh; Dr. Narendra Hulikal, Professor and Head of Surgical Oncology at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati; Dr. Chandramohan of Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram; and Dr. Subbaiah Shanmugham of Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. The partnership aims to strengthen professional development and promote high standards of surgical oncology practice across India.
