A sharp road safety warning from Hyderabad Police has brought attention to a growing and risky trend—motorists watching social media reels while driving. With a cautionary message urging people to “watch the viral ‘Gangeeey’ uncle after stepping out of the vehicle,” authorities highlighted how distracted driving is increasingly turning city roads unsafe.

Officials stressed that even a brief glance at a mobile screen can result in serious accidents, from hitting pedestrians to colliding with other vehicles. Despite repeated advisories, many drivers continue to engage with their phones on the move, endangering not only themselves but also fellow commuters.

Janagam Srinandu, a Hyderabad commuter, shared a troubling experience. “I was travelling in an auto when I saw the driver watching reels while driving. I felt scared and didn’t know whom to complain to. It wasn’t just about me—he was putting others at risk too. It’s completely negligent behaviour,” he said.

Social media users echoed similar concerns. One netizen pointed out that drivers of cars, autos, and even RTC buses are frequently seen using mobile phones while driving, sometimes halting vehicles improperly on roads instead of designated stops. Another user recounted a recent incident where a biker, distracted by reels, rammed into a car, causing damage worth Rs 15,000, only to casually apologise.

Many others criticised the growing “reels culture” among drivers, particularly auto and cab operators, calling it a serious threat to public safety. Passengers say such behaviour leaves them anxious and shaken during their journeys.

With ride services like Rapido and Uber becoming more expensive, commuters say safety should at least be guaranteed. Experts warn that even law-abiding road users can become victims of someone else’s negligence.

Hyderabad Police have urged citizens to avoid using mobile phones while driving and to report unsafe behaviour, reiterating that ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility.
