Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy on Sunday criticised BJP MP DK Aruna’s remarks on the Dindi Lift Irrigation Project, stating that calling for its cancellation was unwarranted.

Speaking to the media at his camp office in Nalgonda, Gutha Sukhender Reddy advised Aruna, a senior BJP leader, to focus on securing the development of irrigation projects rather than fuelling differences among regions.

He urged her to press the Centre for national project status for the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, which would help mobilise the required funds and expedite pending works.

Gutha Sukhender Reddy said the Dindi project was not merely an irrigation scheme but a vital initiative aimed at improving the lives of people in the Devarakonda and Munugode regions, who had suffered from fluoride contamination for decades. The project was conceived to provide safe drinking water to fluoride-affected areas, taking into account the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO), he said.

Opposing the division of water resources along regional lines, Gutha Sukhender Reddy said the argument that water originating in a district should be used exclusively within its boundaries was not justified. If other States adopted the same approach, Telangana would not receive even a drop of water from Karnataka, he remarked.

The Council Chairman pointed out that 30 TMC of water was being supplied to Hyderabad through the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project (AMRP), stressing the need to prioritise the State’s overall interests over regional differences in water utilisation.

Gutha Sukhender Reddy welcomed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s decision to allocate 0.5 TMC of water to the Dindi Lift Irrigation Project, saying it marked a step towards fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of people in the erstwhile Nalgonda district.
