Government-backed self-employment initiatives aimed at strengthening the economic independence of women's self-help groups (SHGs) are yielding encouraging results in Nagalgidda mandal. As part of efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods, extensive awareness campaigns are being conducted on the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme, encouraging women to establish income-generating enterprises. The mandal currently has 423 women's self-help groups with a combined membership of 4,285 women.
Under the livelihood promotion program, financial assistance amounting to Rs 2.80 crore has been extended to establish 276 income-generating units. Beneficiaries have been encouraged to take up activities such as goat rearing and broiler poultry farming. Goat-rearing units have been sanctioned with an investment of Rs 6 lakh each, while broiler poultry units have been approved at Rs 5 lakh each, benefiting a total of 250 individuals.
Officials said the PMFME scheme provides access to bank loans, government subsidies, credit linkages, and support through Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) for establishing enterprises such as goat rearing, broiler farming, animal feed production, and other micro food processing units related to livestock and poultry. Awareness programs are also educating women's group members, farmers, and youth about eligibility criteria, application procedures, required documentation, financing options, and employment opportunities in the micro food processing sector.
Speaking about the initiative, Mandal Mahila Samakhya President Heena Begum said the organization’s primary objective is to help women become economically independent. She urged women to take full advantage of government self-employment schemes such as PMFME to improve their families' financial well-being. She said the organization plans to further strengthen every self-help group in the mandal while expanding livelihood opportunities in goat rearing, poultry farming, and food processing.
