Fire services department always on alert: Director

Director of Fire Service D. Mural Mohan said on Monday that the Fire Services Department is always on alert in disaster relief and crisis management. The inaugural celebrations of the Fire Service Week began on Monday at the state office in Vijayawada under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department. Earlier, the staff paid rich tributes to S.H.Ravikant Mandal from Bihar, who was martyred in the line of duty and also to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary. 

On this occasion D. Murali Mohan said that as soon as the fire department received information about the fire, they get alerted and try their best to prevent the loss of lives, property  and also spread of the fire to nearby areas. He informed that in the last one year, 892 rescue calls and 14,223 fire calls have been made and 1,055 lives have been saved. 

Also Property loss of Rs 935.26 crore has been avoided. He mentioned that for those holding a salary account with Bank of Baroda, a compensation of Rs 1 crore will be given to those who died due in the line of duty and a compensation of Rs 15 lakh for those who die due to other reasons Later, he flagged off a rally of fire department vehicles. He stated that as part of the Fire Service Week celebrations, awareness programs, demonstrations, mock fire fighting exercises, etc would be held from 14th to 20th of April.

History of Fire Service Week  On April 14, 1944, port striking, a ship, exploded at the Bombay Port, injuring several crew members and passengers. In view of the incident, fire fighting week has been celebrated in the country since 1956.
