Cybercrime wing of Hyderabad city arrested a man for allegedly duping a woman of nearly Rs 11 lakh through a fake profile on Shaadi.com.
The accused has been identified as Jogada Vamshi Krishna. According to police, the accused created a bogus profile named Harsha Cherukuri using Shaadi.com’s premium Select Shaadi service, falsely projecting himself as a genuine suitor. Through this, he gained direct access to the victim, a practicing doctor in Hyderabad.
Claiming financial distress, he induced the victim to transfer large sums of money and later issued threats and blackmailed her using personal content. He was arrested on March 15, 2025.
Investigations revealed similar offences committed by the accused in multiple states, with over 20 cases registered, demonstrating a pattern of systemic exploitation of unverified digital platforms. Police finds various points against online matrimonial platform Shaadi.com are Shaadi.com’s premium service falsely marketed profiles as ‘verified’, despite no actual document authentication. A-4 Relationship Manager, shared the accused’s fake profile with the victim, without any background checks, Management officials A-5 Anupam Mittal (Director), A-6 Vignesh (Team Lead), and A-7 Satish (Manager) allowed transmission of unverified data, enabled contact with victims, and took no corrective steps after receiving complaints.
The platform’s negligent business model, focused on revenue generation without safety checks, facilitated multiple such frauds. By failing to discharge their legal responsibilities, Shaadi.com has lost the ‘safe harbour’ immunity under Section 79(1) of the IT Act, 2000.
