Police have registered an FIR against activists following a midnight incident over tree felling near KBR Park in Hyderabad. The sequence of events began around midnight when members of the Save KBR Park group noticed tree cutting activity near the Eco Sensitive Zone and rushed to the spot, objecting to the ongoing work linked to a proposed flyover and underpass project under the city’s infrastructure development plan.
According to the activists, they questioned the tree felling at the site and alleged that it was being carried out without proper clarity on permissions. They said some volunteers formed a human chain and attempted to peacefully stop the activity by engaging with workers on the ground. The situation reportedly escalated during the night as operations continued, prompting police intervention.
Police stated that some individuals allegedly obstructed workers and disrupted official duties during the protest. Following this midnight confrontation, several activists were detained and shifted to Banjara Hills Police Station for questioning. They were later released after initial proceedings. After the detention and release, police registered a case against the activists. The FIR includes Section 126 BNS for wrongful restraint, Section 324 BNS for causing loss or damage to property, and Section 351 BNS for criminal intimidation, read with Section 3(5) BNS on common intention, making all accused equally liable for the alleged offences.
Environmental activist Vijay Mallangi said the group was acting peacefully and only trying to ensure that proper rules and procedures were being followed during the tree felling activity. He alleged that the cases were being filed to dilute the issue and intimidate those raising objections. Vijay also questioned why citizens were being detained for asking for a halt to tree cutting, and said the Save KBR group would continue its campaign more effectively in the coming days.
The incident has triggered concern among residents and environmental groups, while authorities maintain the tree cutting is part of a larger infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and supporting urban development.
