The South Central Railway (SCR) is undertaking a major redevelopment of Kadapa Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), with an estimated cost of Rs 26.08 crore. This initiative is part of a broader plan to upgrade 53 railway stations across Andhra Pradesh, with a total investment of Rs 2,611 crore, aimed at enhancing passenger facilities and boosting regional development.
Kadapa Railway Station, located in the Guntakal Division, is classified as an ‘NSG-3’ category station, featuring three platforms and five rail tracks. Situated on the busy Mumbai–Chennai route, the station has been operational since 1866. The redevelopment plan includes improved traffic circulation, enhanced station buildings, a new entrance porch, Divyang-friendly toilets, an AC waiting hall, parking facilities, a 12-meter foot overbridge, platform resurfacing, and additional platform shelters.
The ABSS mission received a significant push when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for station redevelopment projects in Andhra Pradesh in August 2023 and February 2024. Additionally, Tirupati and Nellore railway stations are undergoing significant upgrades, while Tiruchanur station is being developed to ease congestion caused by increasing pilgrim traffic.
Currently, 31% of the work has been completed, including platform resurfacing and the construction of a TTE rest house. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
