Doctors in Andhra Pradesh’s secondary government hospitals are increasingly performing complex surgeries locally, significantly reducing the need for referrals to major teaching hospitals and offering timely treatment to patients closer to their homes. The Director of Secondary Health (DSH) has identified 32 major and complicated surgeries successfully conducted in secondary hospitals between January 31 and recent weeks this year.

Recognising the efforts of doctors, nurses, and medical teams, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav congratulated the medical staff for their dedication and commitment to public healthcare. Director of Secondary Health KVN Chakradhar Babu issued appreciation letters to 32 medical teams for performing complex surgeries and to 18 hospitals for excellence in implementing national health programmes.

Officials said several hospitals carried out highly specialised procedures despite limited infrastructure compared to large teaching hospitals. In tribal region hospitals, doctors successfully performed surgeries that are usually conducted only in advanced tertiary-care centres.

At Rampachodavaram Area Hospital, doctors successfully performed a total knee replacement surgery in a tribal region patient. Similarly, at Chintapalli Area Hospital, medical teams conducted complex rectal prolapse surgery and hysterectomy procedures for patients suffering from severe fibroid conditions.

In another notable case, doctors at Rajampet Area Hospital facilitated a successful normal delivery for a woman whose first childbirth had been through a Caesarean section. At Narsipatnam Area Hospital, doctors performed a rare skin transplant surgery involving 26 percent of the patient’s skin and also conducted specialised hernia repair surgeries.

Health officials also highlighted that ophthalmologists at Emmiganur Area Hospital completed 511 cataract surgeries in the last 16 months. At Araku Area Hospital, surgeons removed a massive 9-kg tumour from a woman’s abdomen, while doctors at Tenali District Hospital successfully carried out complicated orthopaedic surgeries on accident victims.

Meanwhile, Dharmavaram Area Hospital has recently introduced advanced laparoscopic surgical services with equipment worth Rs 37 lakh, enabling stitch-free surgeries and faster recovery for patients.
