Colon cancer: Rising risk, strong hope

Hyderabad: Colon cancer cases are rising in India, with doctors warning that patients are increasingly younger. Over 65,000 new colorectal cancer cases are reported every year, and nearly one in four patients is below 40. Urban lifestyles marked by processed food, low fibre intake, obesity, stress and long sitting hours are major risk factors, while rural areas face late diagnosis due to poor awareness.

A Hyderabad man, Raja K, 44, ignored rectal bleeding assuming it was piles and was later diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer. After surgery and short chemotherapy, he returned to work within three months. Doctors say early detection offers up to 90% survival.

Symptoms like blood in stool, persistent bowel changes, unexplained weight loss, fatigue and abdominal pain should not be ignored. Modern laparoscopic surgery allows quick recovery and usually avoids permanent colostomy. Even advanced stages are now treatable with targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Screening through colonoscopy can prevent cancer, and FIT tests help detect hidden blood. Healthy lifestyle reduces risk, but screening is essential for early cure.
