What appeared to be simple acidity turned out to be a serious cancer diagnosis for 53-year-old Ramarao, who ignored a persistent cough and mild upper abdominal discomfort for weeks.

When he finally visited CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, expecting routine treatment, doctors diagnosed him with cancer at the gastroesophageal (GE) junction, a difficult-to-detect condition often showing vague symptoms.

A surgical gastroenterology team led by Dr. N. Karunakar Reddy and Dr. Mustafa Hussain Razvi performed a complex robotic-assisted procedure using the Da Vinci Surgical System. The surgery involved complete removal of the stomach affected by the tumour, followed by reconstruction of the digestive tract through oesophagojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy, along with supporting procedures for recovery.

Doctors said the robotic platform enabled high precision in a challenging anatomical region. The patient, who also had hypertension and diabetes, recovered well after surgery with proper medication, antibiotics, and nutritional support, and was discharged in stable condition.

Dr. Reddy cautioned that persistent digestive discomfort or cough should not be ignored, as early detection significantly improves outcomes in gastrointestinal cancers.
