The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday strongly condemned an alleged walkout by a member of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) during the playing of the National Anthem on the opening day of Telangana Assembly’s Budget Session.
BJP State Chief Spokesperson and Media In-charge N. V. Subash termed the incident “deeply condemnable”, calling it an insult to the nation and its constitutional values.
He, in a press statement, said it was shocking that a party which frequently claims that the Constitution is under threat would allegedly show disregard for one of the country’s most sacred national symbols. “Respecting the National Anthem is not merely a protocol but a reflection of one’s commitment to the nation and its democratic institutions”, Subash said, and added that when the entire Assembly stands united in respect for the anthem, such behaviour sends a disturbing message and raises serious questions about the party’s commitment to national values.
The BJP leader said the Assembly is the temple of democracy and elected representatives must set an example by upholding the dignity of national symbols and traditions.
Subash urged the AIMIM leadership to clarify why its 'member' walked out at such a solemn moment. “Those who constantly lecture others about constitutional values must first demonstrate respect for the nation and its institutions”, he remarked.
