The much-anticipated Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district is nearing completion, with officials confirming that nearly 98% of construction work has already been finished. The Andhra Pradesh government is aiming to complete the remaining works by the end of June and operationalise the airport in July or August.
The project, considered a major infrastructure milestone for North Andhra, is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and economic growth. Sources indicated that the government is planning to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the airport, with tentative dates in early July or mid-August currently under consideration.
Even before the airport becomes operational, authorities have begun preparing a comprehensive transportation plan to ensure seamless connectivity for passengers. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is drawing up a strategy to deploy AC electric buses connecting the airport with key cities including Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam.
Field-level surveys are already being conducted by RTC regional and zonal managers to assess passenger demand and route viability. In the initial phase, officials are planning to operate 20 to 30 buses, with scope for scaling up based on commuter response. There are also indications that airline operators have suggested running at least 20 dedicated bus services from Visakhapatnam to the airport.
Demand for metro connectivity grows
The demand for metro rail connectivity to the upcoming airport is gathering momentum. Bhimili MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao has submitted a representation to Metro Rail Managing Director Ramakrishna Reddy, urging the extension of the proposed metro corridor up to Bhogapuram.
At present, the metro project is planned up to Kommadi near Visakhapatnam. Extending the line to Bhogapuram would significantly ease airport access, especially for passengers travelling from Visakhapatnam city. The MLA also proposed further expansion towards Rushikonda, citing rapid growth of IT infrastructure in the area.
Officials said all departments are working in coordination to ensure that supporting infrastructure, including road and public transport connectivity, is ready ahead of the airport’s inauguration. With timelines being closely monitored, the Bhogapuram Airport is poised to emerge as a key aviation hub for Andhra Pradesh in the coming months.
