The Andhra Pradesh government has increased the number of districts in the state to 28, undertaking a fresh administrative reorganisation aimed at improving governance and accelerating regional development. The updated district map, officially released by the State Disaster Management Authority, reflects the creation of two new districts and prominently identifies Amaravati as the state capital.

According to officials, the reorganisation has been carried out to bring administration closer to the people and ensure more efficient delivery of government services. A district has been carved out with Markapur as its headquarters, comprising western parts of Prakasam district. Another district with Polavaram as its centre, drawing areas from West Godavari and Eluru districts. The decision is understood to be driven by the need to focus on the development of backward regions and to strengthen attention in areas linked to key projects such as the Polavaram irrigation project.
