AP Govt introduces QR code for handicrafts

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (Lepakshi) has launched a QR code-based identification system for traditional handicrafts. It may be noted that the Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan had called for such an initiative during the recently held Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Festival to secure greater international recognition for the state's rich artisan heritage.

The QR code system would enable buyers to access comprehensive information about every handicraft and ensure due recognition for the artisans who created them. Acting on his directions, the corporation implemented the project within a month. Under the new system, every handicraft is assigned a unique QR code based on the "Art–Product–Information" model.

By scanning the code with a mobile phone, buyers can instantly access detailed information about the product, including its history, cultural significance, the name of the artisan, the skills involved in its creation, the effort required to produce it, the raw materials used, the time taken to complete the work, and the dimensions of the product.

The QR code also provides information on whether the handicraft has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag or has been identified under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, helping consumers verify the authenticity and heritage of the item. In the first phase, QR code profiles have been assigned to eight iconic handicraft products that represent Andhra Pradesh's diverse artistic traditions.

These include the renowned Bobbili Veena, Kalamkari paintings depicting the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Sri Krishna Leela and Matsya Avataram, as well as Savara tribal paintings. Officials said the initiative will be expanded in phases to cover all handicraft products and artisan clusters across the state.
